American Heat: Wildland Fire Investigation 463-0407
/ 30 min
Wildland fire incidents numbered over 70,000 calls in 2005, with
over 2.8 million acres were burned nationwide. This does not include
weed-filled vacant lots or smaller fires in the urban interface
zone. In November 2006, five USFS firefighters were killed defending
a home in Riverside County, California. The cause was arson, and
the suspect is believed to have ignited over 40 wildland fires.
First responders who can identify origin and cause and preserve
evidence improve the likelihood of capturing and prosecuting arsonists.
PULSE: Surviving the EMS Profession 464-0407
/ 30 min
The EMS field is a very demanding vocation. EMS providers are
often called upon to aid people in a critical medical emergency.
This in turn exposes the EMS provider to repeated exposure to
medical emergencies that most of the population will never see
or be exposed to in a lifetime. In addition, the EMS provider
is exposed to administrative and operational stress. This course
will provide the EMS provider, administrators, municipal leaders,
and EMS family members with useful information for surviving the
EMS profession and identifying the many challenges faced by today's
EMS providers.
Safe Arrival 038-0407 / 30 min
As it is essential for firefighters to arrive on a scene safely,
it cannot be stressed enough the importance of the operator having
a positive attitude that contributes to a safe work environment
for everyone on board the fire apparatus. In turn, everyone on
board the fire apparatus needs to have an attitude that contributes
to a safe response and that each firefighter riding on the apparatus
is personally responsible and accountable for his or her own personal
safety.

American Heat: Utility Control 463-0507
/ 30 min
The utility control program contains information about electrical,
gas, and water emergencies and how to mitigate them. Each of these
emergencies is unique, but many of the tactics to be considered
by command are quite common. The course topics include stand-alone
utility emergencies, as well as how utilities affect a
structure fire response.
PULSE: High-Risk Obstetrics 464-0507
/ 30 min
There are few calls that EMTs
respond to that are as memorable and satisfying as delivering
a healthy baby. First responders often do this in a less than
ideal environment: in the middle of the night at the mother's
home, in the back of a cramped ambulance, or on a city bus. Fortunately
for EMTs, most of the time all goes well despite the pre-hospital
conditions. However, when things go badly with the mother or baby,
the actions that we take can be life-saving for both the mother
and baby. There is no such thing as a "routine" pre-hospital
childbirth. This course provides EMTs with a basic refresher on
reproductive anatomy. Also discussed are conditions that place
the woman and baby at high risk for complications, guidelines
for conducting a patient assessment, and a basic demonstration
of how to deliver a baby.
Weapons of Mass Destruction: Decontamination 038-0507 / 30 min
This course will illustrate the Montgomery County Decontamination
System and how the system will support both field and hospital
applications as adopted by Montgomery County and the South Pennsylvania
Terrorism Task Force. Their example can be adapted and applied
in most regions.
