The FETN Family: Green Township Fire & EMS

FETN recently interviewed Chief Doug Witsken of Green Township Fire & Rescue in Ohio. Here is a description of the Department and its activities as told by the Chief. We are happy to welcome Green Township Fire and Rescue as part of the FETN Family!

Please provide a brief description of your department and the community you serve.

Green Township Fire & EMS protects a 28-square mile community of 58,000 residents. The township is the largest township in the State of Ohio (based on population) and borders the west side of the City of Cincinnati. The department consists of 41 full-time and 40 part-time employees staffing four fire stations. In 2006, the department responded to 4492 EMS Runs and 1728 Fire Runs, for an average of 17 emergency runs per day.

What makes your department stand out in the community you are in?

The department has been an important part of Green Township since 1944 when it was started by a small group of volunteers. As the township has grown, the department has experienced tremendous growth as well, transitioning from a one station all-volunteer department to the four-station paid department today. The department is very active in the community, with many public education and public service programs.

How long has your department been training with FETN? Describer your department’s training activities and the role FETN plays.

The department subscribed to FETN PrimeNet in early 2006. The decision to subscribe to FETN was reached after carefully considering the options to modernize the department’s training resources. Many of the department’s training materials were outdated, and it would have been very expensive to invest in new books, videos, and DVDs to replenish the training library. Even after that was done, it would only be a few years before the materials would be outdated again. Using FETN PrimeNet is an excellent way to maintain an up-to-date library of training resources. It also allows firefighters to engage in self-study or to organize impromptu in-station training sessions on a wide variety of Fire & EMS topics.

What challenges/accomplishments has your department been faced with?

Our department’s major challenge is to be prepared for any emergency it may be called to, whether it is Fire, EMS, Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, or WMD/Terrorism. FETN offers us training programs on all of these topics that will help us be prepared.

Thank you, Chief Doug Witsken and the entire team of the Green Township Fire & Rescue in Ohio. We are proud to have you as part of the FETN Family!
