Provide a brief description of your department and the
community you serve.
Toronto is Canada's largest city and sixth largest government,
and home to a diverse population of about 2.6 million people.
It is the economic engine of Canada and one of the greenest
and most creative cities in North America. In the past three
years Toronto has won more than 50 awards for quality and
innovation in delivering public services.
"Courage to move forward, Compassion in everything
we do, Service without boundaries" is the credo of
the Toronto Fire Services. We provide high quality and caring
services to those who live in, work in and visit our City
safely, efficiently and effectively. We are the largest
fire service in Canada and the fifth (5) largest fire service
in North America. We annually respond to about 140,000 emergency
incidents, representing approximately 300,000 vehicle runs.
The Toronto Fire Services is committed to protecting life,
property and the environment from fire, hazardous materials,
natural disasters and other emergencies. The Fire Prevention
Division of Fire Services provides information about emergencies,
fire regulations, home inspections, and the Alarm for Life
campaign regarding smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detection.
Fire Services provides public education and school fire
safety programs in accordance with the Fire Services Act,
in addition to delivering fire and emergency training to
all employees and appropriate outside organizations.
As the largest fire department in Canada, please tell
us the challenges as well as the accomplishments of your
department.
As the largest city and fire service in Canada, Toronto
Fire Services is challenged daily to overcome and mitigate
the adverse effects caused by fires, structural collapses,
medical emergencies, all rescue situations, hazardous materials
releases, acts of terror, and natural disasters. Toronto
Fire Services has taken an "All Hazards" approach
to prepare for any emergency and aggressively develops and
trains all the Services' fire fighters to be safe and efficient
in their duties.

Describe your department's training activities and the
role you see FETN playing.
Toronto Fire Services is responsible to mitigate all fire
and rescue emergencies within the City of Toronto (population
2.6 million). In order to prepare for this task, Toronto's
fire fighters regularly train in the theory and practical
aspects of all related disciplines including, but not limited
to, fire fighting, technical rescues, hazardous materials,
pumping operations, emergency medical services, and officer
development. The American Heat video series will
be extensively used to augment daily training activities
and to provide for supplemental theory application prior
to practical sessions. The course creation tool feature
will allow for Toronto Fire Services specific information
delivery to all personnel, both before and after training
sessions.
