Waterbury, Ct - Capt. John Keane died and Joseph Fischetti remains in critical condition when they were thrown from an engine truck when it collided with a ladder truck while responding to a kitchen fire at a home. Keane suffered head and internal injuries, and Fischetti, who was driving the engine truck, sustained internal injuries, fire officials said. Six other firefighters were injured, but they are expected to recover, authorities said. The engine truck was heading west and the ladder truck was traveling north when they collided at a high rate of speed at the intersection of the two roads, officials said. It's the second time Waterbury firefighters have mourned after a truck crash. Firefighters Howard Hughes and Heriberto Rivera were killed on May 10, 1990, after their fire truck lost its brakes and crashed into a tree on the way to a call.

Minneapolis, MN - Two Minneapolis firefighters staged a dramatic escape from a burning building. They were battling a blaze at a duplex when the flames became too intense and they were ordered out of the building. Firefighters raised a ladder and before it was even fully in place, one dove out the window head first sliding down the ladder on his chest. Moments later, a second firefighter also made his way to safety. Both had clearly been properly trained in how to get out of a burning building. Neighbors were forced to hose down their homes in order to keep the flames from spreading. Six people were inside the duplex at the time of the blaze--three downstairs and three upstairs. All made it out safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fulton County, GA - Firefighters in the Atlanta area mourned the death of firefighter Felix Roberts. The 41- year old Roberts died while trying to save a man inside a burning home on Memorial Day. Roberts became the first firefighter killed in the county department's 29-year history. Investigators say Roberts died when a flashover occurred. A resident also died in the fire. Two other firefighters were injured. Captain Wayne Gilliard suffered second degree burns to his hands. Captain Anothony Avery was treated for chest discomfort.
