New Releases from PULSE & AMERICAN HEAT

What's On - New Releases in May, 2007

American Heat: Utility Control
463-0507 / 30 min
The utility control program contains information about electrical, gas, and water emergencies and how to mitigate them. Each of these emergencies is unique, but many of the tactics to be considered by command are quite common. The course topics include stand-alone utility emergencies, as well as how utilities affect a
structure fire response.

PULSE: High-Risk Obstetrics
464-0507 / 30 min
There are few calls that EMTs respond to that are as memorable and satisfying as delivering a healthy baby. First responders often do this in a less than ideal environment: in the middle of the night at the mother's home, in the back of a cramped ambulance, or on a city bus. Fortunately for EMTs, most of the time all goes well despite the prehospital conditions. However, when things go badly with the mother or baby, the actions that we take can be life-saving for both the mother and baby. There is no such thing as a "routine" prehospital childbirth. This course provides EMTs with a basic refresher on reproductive anatomy. Also discussed are conditions that place the woman and baby at high risk for complications, guidelines for conducting a patient assessment, and a basic demonstration of how to deliver a baby.

Weapons of Mass Destruction: Decontamination
038-0507 / 30 min
This course will illustrate the Montgomery County Decontamination System and how the system will support both field and hospital applications as adopted by Montgomery County and the South Pennsylvania Terrorism Task Force. Their example can be adapted and applied in most regions.

What's Next - New Releases in June, 2007

American Heat: Community Disaster Planning
463-0607 / 30 min
The goal of this course is to reinforce the importance of pre-planning, code enforcement, and conducting multiagency drills. This incident emphasizes the importance of a coordinated response to a large-scale incident.

PULSE: Geriatric Patient Down
464-0607 / 30 min
Approximately 25 percent of Americans will be 65 years of age or older by the year 2030 and will represent 70 percent of all ambulance transports. The geriatric patient is at a high risk of falling, which makes this one of the most common calls EMTs will face, especially in locations with a large geriatric population. This course discusses why older adults are at increased risk of falls, common MOIs, and emergency treatment modalities for older adults.

Swiftwater Safety and Rescue: A Matter of Survival
038-0607 / 30 min
An average of 200 Americans drown each year in flash flooding. It is the top weather-related killer, ahead of earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. This course includes basic safety and survival skills to be implemented in and around the moving water environment. It also covers basic rescue skills, including self-rescue skills, shorebased rescues, management of aquatic spinal injuries, rescue from low-head dams, and boat-based rescues.
