Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
In our present society, violence has unfortunately become commonplace in our schools, in our jobs, and even in our travels. In addition, numerous tragedies occur daily whether the result of a natural catastrophe, assault, rape, or a serious accident. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric condition that affects both the civilian and military populations. The purpose of this program will be to explore the many facets of PTSD by discussing the history of the disorder, the epidemiological and prevalence rates, accurate diagnosis and assessment, and both the psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. Recognition of patient resistance and the potential for vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue will be discussed. It is the expectation that the audience will gain a new perspective on the prevalence and importance of early intervention and treatment of PTSD.

Clinical Critical Care
ACLS Update, Part 5: Pre-Arrest Situations
Many arrhythmias occur that can lead to an arrest situation, such as symptomatic bradycardias, tachycardias, and ventricular tachycardia with a pulse. This activity focuses on the management of these pre-arrest rhythms to prevent deterioration into lethal arrhythmias. Emphasis is placed on how to properly perform synchronized cardioversion. Pharmacological interventions are also discussed.

ACLS Update, Part 6: Mega Codes
This final part of the ACLS series focuses on important concepts to remember when performing a mega code during an advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) class. Three mega codes focusing on the life-threatening arrhythmias, which include pulseless ventricular tachycardia progressing to ventricular fibrillation, asystole, and pulseless electrical activity, are highlighted. Advanced techniques such as airway adjuncts, intubation, defibrillation, and transcutaneous pacing are emphasized. The importance of pharmacological interventions is also incorporated.

Legal/Regulatory
EMTALA Overview and Patient Access
This activity provides the history of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Law (EMTALA) and explores how it became statute. Hospitals that accept Medicare and advertise emergency room services are statutorily required to provide appropriate screening examinations to determine whether emergency medical conditions exist, regardless of patients’ ability to pay. Learn about the law, medical stability, transfer issues, and documentation to comply with EMTALA.

Infection Control
Can MRSA be Cured?
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a growing problem in the healthcare setting. It occurs most frequently in patients who undergo invasive medical procedures, have weakened immune systems, and are receiving care in hospitals, long term care facilities, and dialysis centers. This activity presents an overview of MRSA and discusses how it spreads and how it can be prevented. The nationwide campaign by collaborating agencies to prevent MRSA in healthcare settings is also explained. This activity reviews the epidemiology of Staphylococcus aureus and provides an overview of the current recommended infection prevention and control practices. Focus is placed on guidelines issued to prevent acquisition of multiple drug-resistant organisms and the healthcare worker's role in interrupting transmission. The status of federal and state legislation regarding mandatory public reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the consumer expectation of zero infections are also discussed.

Professional Development
