NEW ECG Series

Has it been awhile since you have had a patient on a cardiac monitor? Would you like an opportunity to review various dysrhythmias? Cardiac monitors are used in most patient care areas. And the ECG is one of the most important clinical indicators of the heart's function. Take advantage of this opportunity to gain self-confidence and build your knowledge by participating in one or all five activities in the ECG Interpretation series.

ECG Interpretation: Foundations
(April 2007 - 432-0114)
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a diagnostic tool used to measure, record, and analyze the electrical activity of the heart. This activity provides a foundation for ECG interpretation. The heart’s conduction system, electrode lead placement, ECG waveforms, and a step-by-step approach to analyze ECG tracings are discussed.

ECG Interpretation: Mechanisms of Sinus Rhythms
(April 2007 - 432-0115)
The sinus node is the pacemaker of the heart. This activity defines a normal sinus rhythm as a baseline and discusses dysrhythmias of the sinus origin. These dysrhythmias include sinus tachycardia, sinus bradycardia, sinus arrhythmia, sinus arrest/blocks, and sinus pause.

ECG Interpretation: Mechanisms of Atrial Origin
(May 2007 - 432-0116)
This program addresses atrial dysrhythmias. Topics discussed include: common atrial tachyarrhythmias as well as atrial ectopics and ectopic rhythms. Characteristic EKG and patient assessment features for each dysrhythmia will be reviewed as well as approaches to intervention, consistent with physiologically based as well as ACLS recommended strategies.

ECG Interpretation: Junctional Rhythms and
AV Block

(June 2007 - 432-0117)
A junctional rhythm is a dysrthythmia originating in the atrioventricular (AV) junctional tissue area. AV heart block describes a conduction delay or failure. This activity provides essential information for interpretation, identification and treatment in abnormal and life-threatening rhythms of junctional origin and the conduction disturbances of AV block.

ECG Interpretation: Ventricular Rhythms
(July 2007 - 432-0118)
This program addresses ventricular rhythms. Topics discussed include: premature ventricular contractions, ventricular escape beats, accelerated idioventricular rhythms, rhythms with independently firing atrial and ventricular foci as well as the life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. Characteristic EKG and patient assessment features for each dysrhythmia will be reviewed as well as approaches to intervention, consistent with physiologically based as well as ACLS recommended strategies.

Customer Satisfaction

Customer Service: Handling Family Expectations
441-0002
Every time you interact with a family member, you are representing yourself and your facility. The impression you make can affect whether or not you retain business. This activity provides tips and strategies you can immediately incorporate to positively manage family expectations.

Behavioral/Psych & Gerontology

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders
432-0102
This activity provides an overview of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related disorders to help all clinical and non-clinical staff gain a better understanding of AD processes and the behaviors they may cause. The characteristics of AD and related disorders are provided, and communication strategies for all staff members to incorporate into their daily activities are discussed.

Infection Control & Gerontoloty

Identification and Treatment of STDs in the Older Adult
432-0111
Older adults are remaining sexually actively much longer, placing increasing importance on risk-assessment screening, education, and prevention. Diagnosis may be delayed in this population because the signs and symptoms may mimic other infections or chronic conditions seen in older adults. The activity provides information related to epidemiologic trends of STDs in older adults, risk factors, advances in diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.

Clinical-Disease Management

Parkinson's Disease: Symptoms and Diagnosis
432-0018
This activity discusses Parkinson's Disease, the symptoms and the diagnosis. Over one million Americans suffer from this debilitating neurological disease and many will require long term care. Having a thorough understanding of this disease process can help you provide the best care possible to your patients afflicted with this condition.

Beyond Compliance/Mandatory

Beyond Compliance: Pediatric CPR
450-0051
The American Academy of Pediatrics and The American Heart Association (AHA) recently released new guidelines for pediatric CPR. This activity provides an overview of the guidelines including information on the pediatric chain of survival, compression, ventilation cycles broken down by age, and rescue of an infant or child choking victim.

Beyond Compliance: Managing Diversity in the Healthcare Workplace
450-0063
The healthcare community is more culturally diverse than ever before, and supervising the modern team can be both challenging and exciting. It can also be frustrating if managers are not trained to deal with a group of team members from different cultural backgrounds. Managers have an ethical and legal responsibility to treat all employees and patients with fairness and respect, regardless cultural, ethnic, or racial background. This course focuses on strategies you can use to successfully develop and lead a diverse team.

Beyond Compliance: Service Excellence in Healthcare
450-0065
In recent years, more attention has been placed on providing excellent service to patients. In fact, patients demand it. In these difficult economic times, healthcare facilities cannot afford to lose even one patient due a negative patient service experience. The good news is that healthcare facilities often get a second chance to fix the problem since the patient usually stays in the facility longer than in most service situations. This course discusses the following topics: internal and external customers, service expectations of patients as revealed in patient surveys, obstacles to patient service, and service recovery in difficult situations.

Gerontology

The American Journal of Nursing, The Gerontological Society of America and Trinity Healthforce Learning present:
A NEW LOOK AT THE OLD: Sensory Deficit in Older Adults: Hearing Loss

424-0017
Assessing the older adult for different types of hearing loss is an important role. Observations can provide insight into the hearing deficit of older adults. Intervention can include adaptive techniques, environmental modifications, and assistive devices. This activity discusses cause of hearing loss, assessment techniques, and interventions.

The American Journal of Nursing, The Gerontological Society of America and Trinity Healthforce Learning present:
A NEW LOOK AT THE OLD: Sensory Deficit in Older Adults: Caring for Those with Hearing Loss

424-0018
For many older adults, hearing loss can be a difficult aspect of aging. When caring for people with hearing loss, adaptive techniques, environmental modifications, and assistive devices can be used to ensure effective communication. This activity discusses how these interventions can help with the challenges associated with hearing loss.

Beyond Compliance/Mandatory

Beyond Compliance: Preventing Injuries from Slips, Trips, and Falls
450-0071
Healthcare workers often focus on the health and safety of their patients and visitors. However, healthcare workers are just as likely to suffer an injury on the job as the individuals they serve. This course brings to light common situations and hazards which can cause painful injuries due to slips, trips, and falls. In addition, learn how to take preventive measures to avoid these hazards, as well as how to perform the proper first aid steps known as "ACT."

Beyond Compliance: Electrical Safety
450-0067
Electricity has revolutionized the world. While electricity makes life easier and even saves lives, if not handled with care, it can also be very dangerous. With all of the electrical equipment in a healthcare facility, it is important to be able to identify and avoid electrical dangers where you work. This program will discuss types of electrical dangers, how to prevent electrical shock, and how to locate the safety guidelines in your facility.

Beyond Compliance: Diversity in the Healthcare Workplace
450-0069
The face of our nation has changed dramatically. And in the next 50 years, all major minority groups are estimated to increase in population. To meet the demands of such a diverse culture, healthcare facilities need employees who can work well with patients and coworkers from different backgrounds. This course increases staff sensitivity to cultural differences and offers guidelines for working within a diverse environment.
