************** Update for PWPL CD-ROMs ************** ************** January 17th, 2000 ************** Overview: --------- This file describes how to install the updated common files (COMN?.SBK). These files contain patches designed to alleviate a known problems in MPEG player software, including MS ActiveMovie. Installing The Update: --------------------- 1. Copy the WLN.INI file to workstation ID directory (C:\IDWINCMS) on the local hard drive. C:\IDWINCMS is created after the Windows Course Management System (CMS) is run the first time on that workstation. NOTE: This file must be copied to C:\IDWINCMS on EACH workstation, even on network installations. 2. Copy the COMN.SBK, COMN2.SBK, COMN3.SBK and MMSITE.TBK files to the directory where the Course Management System (CMS) is installed. In Standalone installations, this is C:\NCMS by default. If you are running a networked CMS installation, make sure that these files are flagged as Shareable for Netware networks or marked as READ-ONLY for non-Netware networks. Please consult your network administrator for assistance with setting these file attributes. Enabling the Patchs: -------------------- The WLN.INI included with this update contains the following lines: [Patches] amovfix=on tsfix=on am61=on ntamovfix=off cmodfix=off playfix=off MPGWAVAVIlevels=50,50,50 To enable a specific patch, change the "off" to "on". Each line has a specific function. Often you will have more than one line set to "on" depending on your specific system configuration. The last line addresses a common problem of uneven audio playback within a unit. These numbers do not need to be manually set. An explanation of this patch is in the next section. Patch Descriptions: ------------------- AM61: This modifies the sequence of commands used to play MPEG files. This change is required on systems running the latest version of ActiveMovie. The version of ActiveMovie is distributed with MS Internet Explorer 5 and the Windows Media Player V6.x. AMOVFIX: This causes the courseware to change the style of window the video creates when opening an MPEG clip. This patch speeds up the video frame rate on MPEG playback with ActiveMovie. This patch applies to Win95/98 but may yield positive results on a few Windows NT systems NOTE: When this patch is activated, the zooming "F5" function will only work when video is paused, not playing. To zoom the video, click on the pause button, then "F5" and click pause to resume the video. The one side effect is altered F5 availability. Clicking on buttons/objects in the program functions as normal. TSFIX: This patch was implemented to bypass a problem in ActiveMovie that can cause the system to task switch back to the CMS if a specific series of actions are performed. This patch applies to Win95/98 but may yield positive results on a few Windows NT systems NTAMOVFIX: This patch adjusts the video playback of the unit introduction. This corrects the NT/ActiveMovie disappearing video in the unit introduction. This is an extremely obscure problem, that has only manifested itself on Windows NT 4.0 running ActiveMovie. CMODFIX: This patch determins which MPEG device name that the CD-ROM units will use to display video. if CMODFIX is off (default) the device name MPEGVideo is used. The device name REELMagic is used when CMODFIX is set to on. This patch was originally developed for the Compaq LTE laptops using the Compaq MPEG adapter, but allows you to switch between two unique MPEG players if necessary. PLAYFIX: This patch adjusts for an MPEG player that incorrectly returns the number of frames (length) of a video clip. Setting PLAYFIX to on truncates the clip by 1/3 second. This patch was originally developed for the Compaq LTE laptops using the Compaq MPEG adapter. MPGWAVAVIlevels: This patch allows the user to adjust the audio playback levels within a unit. Some of the Maintenance and Operations units have audio levels that shift between video and still picture playback. To adjust these, pause the video and use [CTRL] + [U] and [CTRL] + [D] to move the audio up and down. The type of audio being adjusted depends on what is currently on the screen when this is done, be it a video or still picture voice over. Common WLN.INI Settings: ------------------------ * Win95/98, ActiveMovie 1.0 [Patches] amovfix=on tsfix=on am61=off ntamovfix=off cmodfix=off playfix=off MPGWAVAVIlevels=50,50,50 * Win95/98 IE5 or Windows Media Player 6.X [Patches] amovfix=on tsfix=on am61=on ntamovfix=off cmodfix=off playfix=off MPGWAVAVIlevels=50,50,50 * Win NT IE5 or Windows Media Player 6.X [Patches] amovfix=off tsfix=off am61=on ntamovfix=off cmodfix=off playfix=off MPGWAVAVIlevels=50,50,50 Note: Some Win NT systems may benefit from the TSFIX and AMOVFIX. If the unit introduction does not play properly, enable the NTAMOVFIX line. * Win 3.1/95/98 with Realmagic card [Patches] amovfix=off tsfix=off am61=off ntamovfix=off cmodfix=on playfix=off MPGWAVAVIlevels=50,50,50 Note: This configuration will usually work properly with all patch settings turned off. * Win 95/98 with Compaq LTE Laptop and MPEG adapter [Patches] amovfix=off tsfix=off am61=off ntamovfix=off cmodfix=on playfix=on MPGWAVAVIlevels=50,50,50 Please call WLN Technical Support if you require additional assistance or information
