OVERVIEW
The purpose of this unit is to give trainees a general understanding of bloodborne pathogens in an industrial environment.  At the conclusion of this unit, trainees will have a basic understanding of what bloodborne pathogens are and how they can be exposed to them; the more common bloodborne diseases and why they need to be careful around blood and other potentially infectious material; and specific ways they can protect themselves.

 

OBJECTIVES

 

Workplace Risks

·         Explain what bloodborne pathogens are and how you can be exposed.

·         Discuss the requirements of the OSHA bloodborne pathogens standard.

 

Bloodborne Diseases

·         Describe HIV and AIDS, HBV, and HCV.

 

Protecting Yourself

·         Discuss "Universal Precautions."

·         Describe the routes of exposure for bloodborne pathogens.

·         Discuss PPE and personal hygiene measures. Describe how to handle contaminated sharp objects.

·         Explain how to clean up a spill.

·         Explain what to do if you have an exposure incident.
