Electrical Safety for All Workers

BBEAW

OVERVIEW
The purpose of this unit is to give trainees a general understanding of electrical safety issues facing all workers. At the conclusion of this unit, trainees will have an understanding of some basics about electrical safety that everyone should know; safeguards associated with electrical installations, and the purpose and operation of circuit protection devices; the safe use or portable electric tools and equipment; and the hazards and precautions you should take when working around electric power lines.

OBJECTIVES

Electrical Safety Basics

·         Explain the difference between qualified and unqualified persons.

·         Describe general electrical safety rules.

·         Explain the hazards of wet environments and flammable atmospheres, and associated protective measures.

Installations and Circuit Protection Devices

·         Describe basic requirements for electrical installations.

·         Explain the protection provided by fuses and circuit beakers.

·         Explain the protection provided by ground fault circuit interrupters.

Portable Electric Tools and Equipment

·         Describe safeguards when using portable electric tools.

·         Describe the proper use of extension cords.

·         Describe the types of ladders that can be used around electricity.

Electric Power Lines

·         Describe the hazards presented by overhead power lines.

·         Explain minimum approach distances.

·         Explain minimum clearances for vehicular and mechanical equipment.

·         Describe the hazard presented by underground lines.
