BASIC CHEMICAL PLANT OPERATIONS
(COBCP)
Format: Video

O V E R V I E W
The purpose of this unit is to provide an introduction to chemical plants, plant operations, and process terminology. The unit begins with an overview of the function of chemical plants, followed by functional descriptions of process equipment and systems. Trainees are then introduced to the purpose of process instrumentation. The unit concludes by describing the operator's role in safely maintaining production. This is accomplished by providing examples of general operator duties common to chemical plant operations.

Chemical Plants
  • Draw a block diagram of a simple chemical plant showing the flow paths of materials through the plant.
  • Describe how plant systems work together to produce finished products.
  • State the functions of a water treatment system and a steam generating system.

Chemical Plant Equipment
  • Describe the basic function of each of the following types of equipment: tanks, pipes, valves, pumps, motors, fans, compressors, heat exchangers, and filters.

Plant Systems
  • Describe the basic functions of some types of specialized equipment commonly found in water treatment systems.
  • Describe the basic functions of some types of equipment commonly found in steam generating systems.
Process Systems
  • Describe the basic function of a reactor system, a mixer, and a reactor.
  • Describe the basic function of a distillation system, a distillation column, and a condenser.

Chemical Plant Instrumentation
  • List the types of process variables commonly controlled in chemical plants.
  • Describe the basic functions of sensing devices, transmitters, recorders, and alarms.
  • Describe how a process control system can automatically control the value of a process variable.

Chemical Plant Operations
  • Describe some general chemical plant operations, including examples of control room operations and operations outside the control room.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of personal protective equipment.
