OVERVIEW
This unit describes a typical paper machine breakdown and the procedures for shutdown and startup. Other unit segments show a wire/felt change and a grade change.
OBJECTIVES
Introduction to Papermaking Operations
· List and explain the basic purposes of the three main parts of a paper mill.
· Describe two ways in which paper machines are connected to drive configurations.
Sheet Breaks
· Explain how a sheet break is detected, how its location in pinpointed, and how broke is removed safely from the machine.
· Explain how a paper machine is threaded using a tail.
Shutdown
· Describe common maintenance procedures performed during shutdowns and equipment in stock prep.
· Describe common maintenance procedures performed during shutdowns on equipment in the wet end and the dry end of a paper machine.
Startup
· Describe pre-startup checks commonly performed on equipment in stock prep and on a paper machine
· Describe the steps involved in starting up equipment in stock prep and a paper machine after an extended shutdown.
Forming Wire Changes
· Describe the steps involved in a forming wire change on a cantilevered fourdrinier.
Press Felt Changes
· Describe the steps involved in a press felt change on a paper machine.
