MIXING OPERATIONS
(RCAGS)
Format: Video

O V E R V I E W
This unit introduces trainees to various types of mixing and mixing equipment. After completing this unit, trainees should be able to describe mixers that are commonly used for batch and continuous mixing. Trainees should also be able to describe operator responsibili¬ties associated with the startup, operation, and shutdown of batch mixers and continuous mixers.

Introduction to Mixing
  • Compare and contrast homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures.
  • Explain what is meant by batch mixing and continuous mixing.

Low Viscosity Mixing
  • Identify and describe various types of axial and radial impellers and their mixing flow patterns.
  • Describe the purpose of tank baffling.
  • Describe how the positioning of an impeller can affect mixing.
  • Describe the operation of an in-tank jet mixer.

High Viscosity Mixing
  • Describe the basic design and operation of each of these mixers: gate, ribbon, conical, double-arm, and high-speed.

Batch Mixer Operations
  • Identify some safety considerations that are typically related to the operation of a batch mixer.
  • Identify some operator responsibilities that are typically associated with the startup, operation, and shutdown of a batch mixer.

Continuous Mixing
  • Describe the operation of a mixing tee, an in-line static mixer, and an in-line jet mixer.
  • Describe the parts and operation of a twin-rotor mixer and a twin-screw mixer.
  • Describe the operation of a mixer-extruder.

Continuous Mixer Operations
  • Describe operator responsibilities associated with the startup, opera¬tion, and shutdown of a typical twin-screw mixer.
