Indiana Trooper Killed in the Line of Duty

FORT WAYNE, IN — A 21-year-old Michigan man fired a shotgun and killed an Indiana state trooper, then fatally shot himself. It happened on US 24, about 40 miles southwest of Fort Wayne. Investigators say that 41-year-old Master Trooper David Rich stopped to help what he thought was a stranded motorist. They say the killer was driving a sport-utility vehicle that his father had reported stolen the day before. Rich was an 18-year state police veteran, who was married with a seven-year-old daughter and twin three-year-old sons.

He was driving his unmarked car home from work when he hit an I-4 guardrail, leaving his car disabled in the center eastbound lane. Strohsal clicked on his flashing blue lights, but the angle of his car made it hard for passing drivers to see it, the FHP report said. Strohsal was standing in front of his car about 1:30 a.m. when he saw a SUV coming at him. He tried to run to the inside shoulder, but the driver swerved to the left lane apparently to avoid the stalled car and struck Strohsal.
