Anyone who has ever heard Dave Smith present the Calibre Press Street Survival Seminar, heard one of his speeches or read any of his countless essays (and there are a lot of you out there) will appreciate Dave's insightful piece first run in the Calibre Press Newsline the day after the Virginia Tech shootings. Once again, as he always does, Dave hits the truth as the predictable aftermath of the tragic incident continues to unfold and will be the center of public debate and scrutiny for a long time to come. While the public outcry and confusion over the Virginia Tech shootings continues to mount, the community of Law Enforcement starts another shift and must face what they encounter day in and day out. When the duty belt goes on, the time for debate and scrutiny over what happened during the preceding shift must be placed in the lessons learned file and today must be approached like any other day where training, diligence and safety take precedence over emotion, politics and esoteric banter. I have known Dave (J.D. Buck Savage) Smith for almost two decades and have had the honor of being his partner in hundreds of LETN broadcasts and know him to be one of the most prolific thinkers of our time. Dave always brings his deep cerebral intellect and down-to-earth street smarts to every venue - whether through the formality of a training program, the ever popular Street Survival Seminar, an essay or a one-on-one conversation he'll have with anyone willing to take the time to engage his over-active and always thought provoking mind. Regardless of your own personal view of the Virginia Tech incident I believe you'll find Dave's article reprinted herein to be both compelling and moving. As an esteemed member of the Law Enforcement profession you will find Dave's words cut right to the very core of the human condition and the always unique role you play in the maintenance of the words you spoke when you swore to the oath of the fundamental duty to serve the community to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality and justice. It's my honor to present my friend and colleague to you in this edition of the LETN Newsletter. Don't be surprised if, like me, you read his essay a few times over before you cut and paste into your network of e-mail buddies to share with others that will benefit from the exposure.
